Mayor Proclaims March 21, 2023 as World Down Syndrome Day in Wilber, NE

March 21, 2023

Wilber’s City Council met on March 14th and were honored to have some special guests. Holly Murkle and Decker Truka were there to receive an official document, signed by the Mayor Chrans, proclaiming March 21, 2023 as World Down Syndrome Day in Wilber, NE

As stated in the proclamation, Down Syndrome is a genetic anomaly caused by an extra copy of the twenty-first chromosome. According to current data about 250,000 people in the United States have Down Syndrome. Studies show that about 1 in 800 babies are born with Down Syndrome each year. Down Syndrome does not typically run in families and is not caused by anything either parent did or did not do.

People with Down Syndrome deserve fundamental human and civil rights. Despite dramatic increases in lifespan and intellectual ability, there is still much work to be done regarding the rights to equality, inclusion, education, medical care, research and support for people with Down Syndrome here in Wilber, the State of Nebraska, the United States and abroad.

March 21 has come to represent 3 copies of chromosome 21 and has developed into a movement to celebrate and value people with Down Syndrome around the world and now is officially to be recognized in Wilber, NE. Mayor Chrans encourages the residents of Wilber and beyond to not only observe the day, but also use it as an opportunity to research and learn more about Down Syndrome and celebrate those that people with Down Syndrome.

Through public awareness, the City of Wilber recognizes the hard work and progress made by parents, self-advocates, medical professionals, researchers, and many non-profit organizations all over the world and hopes are that we as City employees, residents and visitors continue to learn and promote an inclusive community.

2023 Resident Reporting

February 14, 2023

On a regular basis the State of Nebraska, Department of Health & Department of Environment and Energy, require municipalities to get information from their residents to ensure healthy conditions are in place and any needed updates have been put in place to stay in compliance with State statutes and guidelines.

All Wilber residents should have received two surveys to complete with your February utility bill. On is the Cross Connection Control. This survey is used to help the City of Wilber prevent any accidental contamination of your drinking water. The second survey is to determine if you have a Lead Service Lead which also ensures that your drinking water is safe to drink and expose your family to.

If you did not return your surveys yet, we now have an option to complete them online or upload your completed paper form or you can still drop them off at the City Office. Please visit the 2023 Resident Reporting Page on our website.

If you have questions regarding either of the surveys, please contact Jason Ripa at 402.821.3233

Give Your Furry Valentine The Gift of Protection

February 1, 2023

If you have a dog, it is a City of Wilber and State of Nebraska ordinance to license them. Review state statue below:

17-526 Dogs and other animals; license tax; enforcement.

Besides it being a requirement of the state and City of Wilber, licensing your dog actually provides a number of benefits to you and your pet.

  1. It proves that your dog and other dogs that yours comes in contact with are vaccinated. Hopefully your pup stays safe when out on walks and even in it’s own yard but should another dog attack, a license will identify if that dog was vaccinated, helping you and your vet to determine the next steps.
  2. Your dog has a better chance of being returned home if lost. In some communities, your pet’s license means a free trip home if they’re found by local animal control. Without a license, it might mean an expensive overnight stay at the municipal animal shelter.
  3. It is a small price to pay for the piece of mind of getting your pet home safe and sound. Even if your dog is not outside on a regular basis, there is always the chance of them slipping out. For only $6.50 (this fee is reviewed on a regular basis to make sure that our cost for tags, etc is covered) your pet would be registered with the City so know who to contact.
  4. It’s quick. You don’t even have to come into the office to register your pet. You can do it online or mail the form in if you’re busy for an additional $1.00 fee to mail the tag.
